There's this argument that beauty is only skin deep, that we should disdain the superficial and search for "deeper" meanings in life. Advocates of this viewpoint discard fashion and turn their thoughts to Huizinga and, what they deem to be, other intellectual pursuits. But tell me, what is more intelligent than fashion? What is more complex and intricate than the perfect little black dress? The dress that is seemingly so simple, but, as a multitude of women could contend to, is so hard to make just right. Designers not only have to be astute scholars of the human anatomy to know what falters and what doesn't, but also have to be knowledgeable on the subtle intricacies of society to know what consumers want. A simple black sheath with holes for the arms and a head will not do. Fashion is a science.
I would additionally argue that fashion is superior to art because we live our lives in it. A painting, no matter how exquisite, just hangs there, it cannot move with you or provide warmth and protection from the elements. It just exists.
Furthermore, through fashion we glean a wealth of information about past generation's societal norms which is tremendously helpful in a multitude of academic fields.
The arguments go on and on, but I fear I may be boring you so I'll just settle with a very simple assertion:
I love fashion.
More specifically, I'm a style girl. Although I did go through that phase of collecting it bags and blindly following trends (I was in high school!), I now realize that style is not trend. Style is something that comes from within you that is intensely and uniquely personal; one's style is the essence of the person put together in a beautiful way.
My style is forever evolving, but the core of it is classics: a lot of Chanel, made pieces, and clothing from my travels. I have a thing for history and especially like collecting antique and vintage clothing and accessories. There's something so special about a made piece with hundreds of years of history imbued within it. The fact that a piece of jewelry could have witnessed the trials and tribulations of people who's lives may have impacted mine directly is extraordinary.
I'm rambling.
Very simply: This blog will serve as a drop box of any current and past musings, finds, and inspirations pertaining to style.
